GREENING AND ENVIRONMENT

NEIGHBOURHOOD GREENING PLAN

GREEN PLAN

The Daniel McIntyre / St Matthews Neighbourhood Greening Plan (2016-2021) was developed with input from community members and aims to outline a broad framework for creating a more green and sustainable Daniel McIntyre/St Matthews neighbourhood. It seeks to address diverse issues like creating more parks and green spaces, promoting cycling/walking and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.  DMSMCA 2016-2021 Five Year Green Action Plan

NEIGHBOURHOOD CLEAN-UPS

Each spring and fall, DMSMCA hosts neighbourhood clean-ups that attract dozens of residents. At certain cleanups, we also include hazardous waste or electronic waste collection.

Throughout the year, we monitor back lanes and public property to report items like bulky waste, graffiti, illegal dumping and stray shopping carts. We also have 24-hour used needle drop-off container located in our rear parking lot.

Between clean-ups, we urge residents to take advantage of the following resources:

- City of Winnipeg 4R Recycling Depots (the nearest is on Pacific Ave., north of McPhillips.)
- West End BIZ Free Graffiti Removal
- Speedy Cart shopping cart collection 204-786-7600

- What to do if I find a needle?

Consult the city’s “who to call” map for a variety of other community cleanup issues.

COMMUNITY GARDENS

COMMUNITY GARDENS

DMSMCA had developed and manages over 70 community garden plots at four sites around the neighbourhood. We assign the plots and ensure water is kept on-site.  Working with funding partners, all our sites have seen major upgrades in the past five years, including new boxes, soil and water storage containers.

Inquires about these gardens can be directed to our Greening Coordinator at greening (at) dmsmca.ca or call 204-774-7005. For garden rules or to register for a plot, see our community garden application.

Here's a look at our community gardens:

The Orioles Community Garden is located in Orioles Park located on the north-west corner of St. Matthews Avenue and Burnell Street. It has on-site water and 40 raised garden boxes that were rebuilt in 2018.

In 2013, it was featured as one of the Canadian Community Economic Development Network's Profiles of Effective Practice in Neighbourhood Renewal Corporations.

The Lipton Community Garden is located in the Lipton Tot Lot at 878 Lipton Street near Yarwood Avenue. It contains on-site water and 11 raised garden boxes that were rebuilt in 2018.

The Winnipeg Central Mosque Community Garden is located behind the mosque at 715 Ellice Avenue. It has on-site water and 10 raised beds rebuilt in 2018.

The Jacob Penner Park Community Garden is located inside Jacob Penner Park, 794 Victor Street between Wellington and Notre Dame Avenues and was developed in partnership with Spence Neighbourhood Association and the City of Winnipeg. It has on-site water and 15 raised garden boxes that were rebuilt in 2013.
