Community Gardens

DMSMCA has developed and manages three community gardens within our neighbourhood. We have over 70 resident families participating in our garden program to date and every year there is a waiting list for each garden. The community association and residents have established garden policies, a governance framework for community garden committees and a process for choosing gardeners when there is more demand than available plots. Each family is responsible for the management of their individual plot, as well as the communal maintenance of the community garden. Each of the gardens consists of 2x10x2 raised beds that take advantage of underused urban spaces and eyesores.

Key Components of our Gardening Program include:

·Mentorship Program: which matches up established community gardeners with those who are trying gardening for the first time

·Gardening and Food Preservation Workshop Series: Horticulture Therapy Workshop, Canning Workshop Series, Intro to Composting, Intro to Gardening, etc.

·Kids Garden Program: this included everything from starting seeds to managing three plots over the summer

·Inner City Garden Tour: held with partner groups Spence Neighbourhood Association and West Broadway Development Corporation and attended by over 70 people last year.

Orioles Community Garden

This garden has over 40 raised beds, a native plant butterfly garden centerpiece, and an extensive compost site. It is located next to a community centre that is badly in need of revitalization and is seen as a positive contribution the public life of the neighbourhood.

Lipton Community Garden

Is located within an existing pocket park that has been empty for a number of years. A group of residents unhappy with the empty lot approached to community association to put a garden in the space. It now has 11 raised beds.

Winnipeg Central Mosque Community Garden

Is a joint project between the mosque and community association. It is presently in the process of being developed but contains 11 raised beds and three decorative planter beds. The garden is located in the parking lot of the mosque which sits empty most of the time. The mosque is committed to making this garden a space for celebration.
